Commerzbank Q2 Net Profit Surges 94%, Beating Estimates Amid Looming UniCredit Takeover
Germany’s Commerzbank, which is inching closer to a potential takeover by Italy’s UniCredit, reported on Thursday a 94% surge in its second-quarter net profit, beating analyst expectations, driven by solid growth in commission revenues.
Net profit jumped to €898 million ($1.04 billion) during the second quarter, compared to €462 million in the same period last year. Analysts had expected an average profit of €845 million, according to a consensus forecast published by Commerzbank.
Hostile Takeover Looms
The two-year ongoing battle over the ownership of Germany's second-largest bank by Italy's second-largest lender has seen significant developments in recent weeks. UniCredit is moving closer to gaining control following its €45 billion hostile takeover bid, while Commerzbank officials indicated that talks regarding a potential deal could resume soon.
Bettina Orlopp, CEO of Commerzbank, addressed the situation, stating that UniCredit, despite holding a significant stake in the bank, cannot "make unilateral decisions regarding fundamental structural measures."
"This creates a clear responsibility on both sides and requires a shared understanding of the business model, as well as the involvement of all stakeholders," Orlopp added.
