The 2026 Esports World Cup (EWC) has officially kicked off in Paris, France, marking the first time the tournament is held outside the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This milestone represents a new phase in the event's global expansion, with the French capital hosting the competitions at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles from July 6 to August 23, 2026.

Regarded as the largest global event in the esports sector, the tournament features over 2,000 male and female players representing 200 clubs from more than 100 countries. Competitors will battle across 25 tournaments featuring 24 of the world's most popular video games, vying for a share of a $75 million prize pool—the largest in esports history.

The opening press conference was held at the Paris City Hall (Hôtel de Ville) and was attended by Emmanuel Grégoire, Mayor of Paris; HRH Prince Faisal bin Bandar bin Sultan Al Saud, Board Member of the Esports World Cup Foundation and Chairman of the Saudi Esports Federation; Marina Ferrari, French Minister of Sports, Youth, and Community Life; and Ralf Reichert, CEO of the Esports World Cup Foundation.

Prince Faisal bin Bandar bin Sultan Al Saud emphasized that the tournament originated in Saudi Arabia with a vision to transform esports into a global platform uniting players, clubs, publishers, and fans. He noted that while Riyadh will remain the permanent home of the tournament, its move to Paris signifies the beginning of a new chapter of global expansion. He also expressed his deep appreciation for the French support that helped bring this first international edition to life.

National Strategy

For her part, French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari explained that hosting the inaugural overseas edition is a significant milestone in France's sporting journey. She revealed that the French government will launch a national strategy this autumn aimed at developing esports from 2026 to 2030. The initiative will focus on regulating the sector, supporting emerging talent, and bolstering France's presence on the international stage.

Ralf Reichert stated that the Esports World Cup brings together the best players, clubs, and games onto a single platform. He explained that the competitions will span seven weeks, crowning an individual champion for each game while clubs simultaneously compete for the coveted Club Championship title.

The launch of the tournament was preceded by the largest qualifying process in its history through the "Road to the Esports World Cup" program. The qualifiers saw the participation of over 1.5 million players competing across 330 tournaments and leagues organized by game publishers and major international event organizers, all fighting to secure their spots in the finals.

Esports Stature

The 2026 edition continues to feature Cristiano Ronaldo and Magnus Carlsen as global ambassadors for the tournament. This partnership reflects the event's growing international prominence and strengthens the connection between esports and traditional sports like football and chess.

The Club Championship holds a central role in the event, with clubs competing to accumulate points across various games to claim the title of the world's best esports club. Out of the total prize pool, $30 million is dedicated to the Club Championship, with $7 million awarded to the first-place club.

Saudi Arabia's Team Falcons will seek to defend its title after being crowned Club Champions in both the 2024 and 2025 editions, aiming for an unprecedented three-peat in 2026.

Fans in over 160 countries will be able to tune into the action through more than 100 broadcast and digital platform partners. The tournament will produce over 7,000 hours of live broadcasting in more than 40 languages, ensuring the competitions reach a massive global audience.

Additionally, over 5,000 accredited content creators will cover the event as part of the Content Creators Program, which recorded a 42% year-over-year growth. This massive coverage will further amplify the tournament's reach across various digital platforms and online communities worldwide.

The tournament is backed by a robust lineup of global partners, including STC Group, Qiddiya, Lenovo, Sony Group, Allianz, Aramco, Saudia, Hilton, OBSBOT, Albaik, Secretlab, Webook, and NRG.

The Esports World Cup Foundation highlighted that the number of gamers worldwide has now reached 3.6 billion, cementing video games as one of the largest entertainment and sports sectors globally.
