Egypt Eyes Regional Tech Hub Status as Nokia Explores Launch of Operations and Support Center

Egypt is stepping up efforts to strengthen its position as a regional hub for telecommunications and IT services, as Minister of Communications and Information Technology Eng. Raafat Hindi held talks with Mikko Lavanti, President of Nokia Middle East and Africa, on plans to establish an integrated regional center for technical support and operational services in Egypt.

The meeting, held on the sidelines of the Finnish President’s visit to Cairo, was attended by senior officials including Jarno Syrjälä, Finland’s Under-Secretary of State for International Trade, Tapio Naula, Commercial Counsellor at the Finnish Embassy, and Eng. Ahmed El Zaher, CEO of the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA), alongside representatives from Egypt’s telecom regulator.

Discussions focused on leveraging Egypt’s strategic location as a regional hub for ICT services, with Nokia outlining plans to launch a comprehensive support and operations center serving Middle East and African markets. The proposed facility is expected to enhance service delivery efficiency, expand regional reach, and improve responsiveness to customer needs, particularly amid rising demand for advanced network management services and digital solutions driven by 5G expansion and increased cloud adoption.

Nokia, a global leader in connectivity infrastructure for the AI era, is seeking to scale its footprint in Egypt by capitalizing on the country’s growing digital ecosystem and skilled talent pool.

Minister Hindi reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing the competitiveness of Egypt’s ICT sector and encouraging global companies to expand their investments in the country. He highlighted ongoing efforts to upgrade telecom networks, improve service quality, and expand nationwide coverage—particularly with the rollout of 5G services—to meet the accelerating demand for digital services and support Egypt’s broader digital transformation agenda.

For his part, Mikko Lavanti emphasized that Egypt represents a strategic hub for Nokia’s regional operations, citing its advanced digital infrastructure, favorable investment climate, and highly qualified workforce as key drivers supporting the company’s expansion plans.

Nokia was part of the Finnish business delegation accompanying the President during the visit, and participated in field tours, including a visit to Knowledge City in Egypt’s New Administrative Capital, where delegates explored major ICT projects and innovation initiatives.

The meeting builds on Nokia’s ongoing engagement in Egypt, including a trilateral memorandum of understanding signed in July 2024 with ITIDA and Telecom Egypt to expand its local operations and establish an IP Networks Center of Excellence, further reinforcing Egypt’s role as a regional exporter of ICT services.
