Egypt Discovers New Gas Well in Zohr Field Producing 70 Million Cubic Feet per Day
Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Eng. Karim Badawi, announced the successful completion of drilling operations for the new “Zohr-9” gas well in the Zohr offshore field in the Mediterranean Sea. The well has revealed a productive gas-bearing layer capable of yielding around 70 million cubic feet of gas per day, marking another milestone in Egypt’s efforts to secure domestic energy supplies and reduce the import bill for natural gas.
The “Zohr-9” well was drilled using the Saipem 10000 drilling vessel, with full adherence to safety standards and the planned schedule. This achievement follows the success of the “Zohr-6” well and forms part of Egypt’s broader plan to enhance production from the Zohr field — a key indicator of the field’s promising potential for future development phases.
In a related development, drilling has commenced on the new exploratory gas well “Denise W-1X” in the Denise development area, located off the coast of Port Said in the Mediterranean. The well is being drilled by the Egyptian rig “Al-Qaher-2,” owned by the Modern Drilling Company, in waters 98 meters deep, targeting a total depth of over 4,200 meters.
Minister Badawi emphasized that the intensified drilling program and the launch of new wells across Eni’s concession areas reflect the company’s confidence in Egypt’s petroleum investment climate and its strong commitment to injecting new capital and expanding cooperation. He added that these efforts also represent a tangible outcome of the Ministry’s recent policies aimed at stimulating investment and removing barriers for international partners.
> The continued exploration and development success in Zohr and other Mediterranean fields underscores Egypt’s position as a regional energy hub and a reliable partner in the global gas market.
