No Price Hike with 5G Launch, Says WE CEO Mohamed Nasr — Network Fully Ready for High-Quality Service

Wednesday 4 June 2025 22:09

Mohamed Nasr, CEO and Managing Director of Telecom Egypt (WE), confirmed that the official rollout of 5G services in Egypt has not led to any increase in data plan prices or consumption costs. Speaking on the sidelines of the launch, Nasr emphasized that customers can enjoy the faster speeds and improved connectivity of 5G without paying more than they do currently.

Network Technically Ready – Minimal Adjustments Made

According to Nasr, WE’s existing 4G infrastructure was already technically equipped to support 5G, requiring only minor adjustments to activate the new service. "Our network was well-prepared. We’ve now launched 5G in selected areas, and customers are already experiencing significantly higher speeds and enhanced performance," he said.

5G Doesn’t Mean Higher Data Usage

Nasr addressed concerns that 5G might lead to increased data consumption, clarifying that the technology is more efficient rather than data-intensive. “5G enables faster data transfers in less time, but it doesn’t necessarily result in higher monthly usage,” he explained.

Initial Coverage Focuses on 5G-Compatible Zones

WE is initially targeting areas where 5G-compatible devices are most prevalent. "We are prioritizing coverage in zones where users already have the right handsets," Nasr said, noting that broader expansion will depend on increased adoption of 5G-enabled devices.

Partnerships Underway to Provide 5G Devices

To further boost access, Nasr revealed that WE is forming partnerships with key stakeholders to supply 5G-capable devices. “We want to make the technology more accessible to our users and help them make the most of the 5G experience,” he added.

The move positions WE as a front-runner in Egypt’s transition to next-generation connectivity, aligning with broader national goals for digital transformation and infrastructure modernization.
