Europe Challenges Visa and Mastercard Dominance: The Rise of Wero and the Quest for Financial Sovereignty
In an unprecedented move to reshape the continent’s financial landscape, the European Union has accelerated its efforts to build a homegrown alternative to US-based payment giants Visa and Mastercard. At the forefront of this movement is the European Payments Initiative (EPI) and its digital wallet, Wero, which aims to eliminate European reliance on American payment infrastructure—a dependency EU officials now categorize as a "strategic vulnerability."
With Visa and Mastercard processing over $24 trillion in annual transactions globally, the challenge is immense. However, the recent integration between the EPI and the EuroPA Alliance has successfully linked 130 million users across 13 countries, creating the first cross-border payment network that bypasses US intermediaries. ECB President Christine Lagarde emphasized that an independent digital payment system is no longer a luxury but a geopolitical necessity, ensuring that European financial data remains under European jurisdiction.
