Cervantes Institute Cairo Marks International Day Against Gender-Based Violence with Art and Dialogue
The Cervantes Institute in Cairo, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Dominican Republic, will commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women tomorrow, Tuesday, 25 November, at 6:30 p.m. at the Institute’s headquarters in Cairo. The event is open to the public, with free admission until venue capacity is reached.
The programme will feature remarks from Natalia Winder Rossi, UNICEF Representative in Egypt, who will address the protection of girls and the safeguarding of children’s rights within Egyptian society. She will be joined by Solange Alvarado, Director of the Centre for Attention to Survivors of Violence at the Public Prosecutor’s Office in the Dominican Republic, who will highlight women’s resistance to violence and honour leading figures dedicated to combating gender-based abuse.
The evening will also include a theatre performance of Las Bernardas and a photography exhibition portraying women from Cuba, Bolivia, Chile, Spain, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay. The collection celebrates resilience and resistance, spotlighting women from across the participating countries who stand against gender-based violence.
An artistic programme will complement the discussion sessions, blending music and dance. The musical segment will feature oud by Marwan Elgamal and guitar by Ahmed Meligy, followed by a dance performance by Nada Omar and Toka Emad.
The event coincides with the anniversary of the assassination of the Mirabal sisters in the Dominican Republic. On 25 November 1960, the three sisters were murdered for their political resistance to the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo (1930–1961). Their legacy as global symbols of courage and defiance inspired the United Nations General Assembly in 1999 to designate 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
