Egypt Wins Regional Leadership Award for Internet Domain Development from the Arab Organization for Communication and Information Technology
The Arab Republic of Egypt has been honored with the Regional Leadership Award for Internet Domain Development from the Arab Organization for Communication and Information Technology, in recognition of its outstanding progress in advancing Internet infrastructure. The award was presented during the Conference of Telecommunications Regulators, which focused on the implementation and adoption of the Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) transition strategies.
This achievement highlights Egypt’s continuous advancements in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector and its commitment to aligning with global trends in digital infrastructure. It also underscores the regional and international recognition of Egypt’s proactive efforts in recent years to modernize its Internet ecosystem.
In May 2025, the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) launched Egypt’s National Strategy for the Transition to IPv6, marking a pivotal milestone in the country’s digital transformation journey. The successful completion of the first phase of this strategic plan led to a substantial increase in the number of IPv6-enabled Internet domains across Egypt—setting a new benchmark among Arab and African nations.
The deployment of IPv6 plays a vital role in supporting next-generation technologies, including 5G networks, the Internet of Things (IoT), and machine-to-machine (M2M) communications—such as smart vehicles and remote monitoring systems. It also enhances network performance, mitigates IP address exhaustion, and strengthens cybersecurity across communication networks.
During the first implementation phase, more than 7 million Internet addresses were successfully transitioned from IPv4 to IPv6. This remarkable achievement reflects the readiness and robustness of Egypt’s digital infrastructure to accommodate future applications and technologies.
According to NTRA’s National IPv6 Transition Plan, Egypt aims to complete the full migration to IPv6 by 2030, in parallel with the nationwide rollout of 5G coverage—cementing its position as a regional leader in digital transformation and network innovation.
