As smartphones, messaging applications and social media platforms become increasingly central to everyday communication, work and financial transactions, protecting personal information has become an essential part of digital life. Individuals face growing risks from account takeovers, phishing attacks, identity theft and online scams, making basic cybersecurity practices increasingly important. Protecting digital accounts requires a combination of technical safeguards, responsible online behavior and awareness of common fraud techniques.

Cyberattacks do not always rely on sophisticated technical vulnerabilities. In many cases, criminals exploit human behavior through fraudulent messages, deceptive links or requests for verification codes. A message pretending to come from a bank, telecommunications provider or trusted contact may be enough to persuade users to disclose sensitive information. Recognizing these tactics is therefore a fundamental part of personal cybersecurity.

Strong Passwords and Two-Factor Authentication

Using strong, unique passwords for every online account is one of the most important cybersecurity measures. Reusing the same password across multiple platforms increases the risk that criminals could access several accounts if credentials from one service are exposed. Users should choose long, difficult-to-guess passwords, avoid personal information such as birthdays and phone numbers, and consider using reputable password managers to store and organize their credentials.

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds another layer of protection by requiring an additional verification step when someone attempts to log in from an unfamiliar device. Facebook and Instagram offer security features that include authentication applications, verification codes and security keys. These measures make unauthorized access more difficult, even when a password has been compromised.

WhatsApp Security: Preventing Account Takeovers

WhatsApp users should enable two-step verification and protect their accounts with the additional security options available in the application. Passkeys can also provide another way to verify identity through a device's fingerprint sensor, facial recognition system or screen-lock credentials.

In August 2026, WhatsApp announced additional account security measures, including stronger two-step verification using longer, more complex passwords and expanded passkey support. These features are designed to make unauthorized account registration and access more difficult.

Users should also regularly review the devices connected to their accounts through the Linked Devices section in WhatsApp settings and log out of any unfamiliar sessions. Verification codes must never be shared with anyone, even if a person claims to represent technical support or appears to be a trusted contact. Such codes can enable criminals to register an account on another device and take control of it.

Phishing and Suspicious Links

Phishing remains one of the common methods used to steal personal information and gain unauthorized access to online accounts. Criminals send messages impersonating banks, telecommunications companies, government agencies or well-known brands, often asking recipients to verify their identities, update account details or claim fictional prizes.

These messages may contain links leading to fake websites designed to collect passwords, banking information and verification codes. Users should avoid clicking on unfamiliar links, downloading unexpected attachments or installing applications from unofficial sources. They should also verify the sender's identity through official communication channels before responding to requests involving personal or financial information. Messages that create a sense of urgency or threaten immediate account suspension deserve particular caution.

Securing Smartphones and Social Media Privacy

Account protection also depends on securing the devices used to access digital services. Users should regularly update operating systems and applications, enable automatic security updates where available, and protect their smartphones with strong passcodes or biometric authentication.

Reviewing application permissions is equally important. Access to contacts, photographs, microphones and location data should be granted only when necessary. Installing applications from trusted sources helps reduce exposure to malicious software.

On social media, users should review privacy settings and control who can view their posts, photographs and personal information. Where available, they should also restrict the ability of others to find their accounts through phone numbers or email addresses. Publishing sensitive information, including official documents, travel tickets, home addresses and daily movements, can expose users to identity theft and other forms of exploitation. Public Wi-Fi networks should also be used cautiously, particularly when accessing banking services or handling sensitive information.

What to Do If an Account Is Hacked

If an account appears to have been compromised, users should act immediately from a trusted device. Recommended steps include changing the password, terminating unfamiliar login sessions, enabling two-factor authentication and checking the recovery email address and phone number associated with the account.

For compromised WhatsApp accounts, the platform recommends re-registering the phone number using the six-digit verification code received by SMS. Users should then review linked devices and notify family members, friends and other contacts that fraudulent messages may be sent from the compromised account in their name.

In Egypt, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology provides digital awareness and cybersecurity education through its Safe Digital Community initiative, developed in partnership with Cisco. The free online initiative covers cybersecurity fundamentals, network basics and ways to protect personal information and privacy while using the internet and social media. Such educational efforts highlight the importance of digital awareness alongside technical security measures in reducing exposure to online threats.
