WeLend Secures FRA Sandbox Approval for AI-Based SME Credit Scoring Initiative in Egypt
Egypt's Financial Regulatory Authority has granted preliminary approval for WeLend to participate in its FRA Sandbox through an initiative designed to improve credit assessments for small and medium-sized enterprises using artificial intelligence and alternative data.
The project is being developed in collaboration with Tamweely and aims to enhance the efficiency of credit evaluation within Egypt's non-banking financial services ecosystem.
Combining AI and Alternative Data to Improve Credit Decisions
The initiative will analyze different types of financial and operational data to support more efficient assessments of SME creditworthiness.
By combining AI-powered analysis with human oversight, the solution seeks to improve the reliability of credit evaluations while reducing the time and costs required to complete the process.
Regulatory Sandbox Supports Fintech Development
Dr. Islam Azzam, Chairman of the FRA, highlighted the importance of the regulatory sandbox in enabling financial technology companies to test innovative solutions within a controlled regulatory environment.
He noted that the initiative supports the practical adoption of emerging technologies across non-banking financial activities while helping improve customer experiences and the quality of financial and insurance products.
The FRA also aims to ensure that technological innovation develops alongside appropriate safeguards for market stability and consumer protection.
11 Projects Receive Preliminary Sandbox Approval
Ahmed Khalifa, Executive Director of the FRA Sandbox, revealed that the latest approvals have increased the total number of projects granted preliminary approval since the platform's launch to 11.
Two of these projects have already moved into live testing, reflecting increasing interest from fintech companies and entrepreneurs in developing and validating innovative financial solutions under regulatory supervision.
The initiative represents another step toward expanding Egypt's fintech ecosystem and encouraging the use of artificial intelligence in financial services.
