Classic photography aesthetics are becoming increasingly accessible through smartphones, as vivo and ZEISS demonstrated at their Imaging Tech Talk in Cairo, where the companies presented the portrait photography capabilities of the vivo V80.

The session focused on how optical characteristics traditionally associated with professional camera lenses can be adapted for mobile devices, allowing users to experiment with background blur, light effects and portrait composition.

Turning Classic Lens Designs into Digital Portrait Effects

ZEISS, established in 1846, has a long history in optical engineering. Its Planar, Sonnar and Biotar lens designs are associated with distinctive image characteristics, including different bokeh patterns, highlight rendering and transitions between sharp and blurred areas.

Building on their global imaging partnership, launched in 2020, vivo and ZEISS have worked to bring elements of professional optical technology into smartphone photography. Their collaboration includes the vivo ZEISS Imaging Lab, where the companies explore how imaging innovations can be adapted to mobile devices.

In 2025, both companies renewed and expanded the partnership, continuing their efforts to develop optical technologies and mobile photography experiences.

Biotar and Sonnar Styles Expand Portrait Options

The vivo V80 features ZEISS Style Bokeh, a set of portrait effects inspired by the visual signatures of classic ZEISS lenses.

The Biotar-inspired effect creates a swirling background blur, giving portraits a distinctive vintage-inspired appearance. The Sonnar-inspired option, meanwhile, delivers softer and more gradual background transitions, creating a balanced relationship between the subject and the surrounding scene.

As software-driven effects, these styles give users the flexibility to select the look that suits their environment and lighting conditions, without carrying multiple professional lenses.

Dedicated 85 mm and 100 mm Portrait Focal Lengths

The device's imaging system is built around a 50MP ZEISS Super Telephoto Camera, with two dedicated portrait focal lengths: 85 mm Portrait and 100 mm Close-Up Portrait.

The 85 mm focal length allows photographers to include more environmental context in their portraits, while the 100 mm option is designed to bring facial expressions and close-up details into greater focus.

These capabilities provide additional creative flexibility, allowing users to shape the mood and visual narrative of an image through framing, lighting and background effects.

Through practical demonstrations in Cairo, vivo and ZEISS showed how professional optical concepts can be incorporated into smartphone photography, turning established lens aesthetics into accessible tools for everyday creators.
