Amazon is preparing to access as much as $80 billion through credit facilities to support its purchases of technology equipment and assets, adding another funding channel as the company accelerates investment in artificial intelligence and cloud computing.

The financing arrangement is expected to be available from the first quarter of 2027 through the third quarter of 2028. It will be secured by certain technology assets and equipment purchased by Amazon using the borrowed funds, giving participating lenders collateral linked to those acquisitions.

Five-Year Borrowing Terms

The credit facilities will carry variable interest rates, while each individual borrowing will have a five-year maturity period starting from the date the funds are drawn.

Amazon has not revealed which financial institutions will provide the financing. Details about the eligible equipment and the interest rates have also not been disclosed.

AI Expansion Drives Funding Requirements

The move highlights the growing financial demands associated with Amazon's expansion of its AI and cloud infrastructure, particularly its investments in data centers and advanced semiconductor chips.

The company has traditionally financed its growth through cash flows generated by its e-commerce and cloud computing operations, alongside debt raised through bond markets.

However, Amazon recorded negative free cash flow of $42.4 billion during the 12-month period ending September 30, 2026, reflecting mounting investment requirements.

Spending Commitments Reach $883 Billion

Amazon's overall financial commitments stood at $883 billion at the end of September 2026. The figure includes debt repayments, interest expenses, lease obligations, and commitments related to property and equipment purchases, representing a 36% increase compared with the previous quarter.

The company is expected to allocate approximately $220 billion to spending in 2026, as it continues to build the infrastructure required to expand its AI and cloud services.
