Egypt Deploys Electronic Tracking to Strengthen Fuel Distribution Oversight in Port Said

Egypt is set to introduce a new digital monitoring mechanism for petroleum product distribution in Port Said as authorities step up efforts to strengthen fuel governance and improve oversight through technology.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources will start a one-month pilot of the system on November 1, 2026. The initiative will rely on vehicle electronic stickers to collect refueling data and monitor the movement of petroleum products across the distribution chain.

According to the ministry, the system is designed to identify unusual consumption patterns and support inspection activities, while helping prevent the leakage and illegal diversion of petroleum products.

Port Said Chosen for Initial Pilot

The electronic monitoring system will initially operate in Port Said for one month.

The trial period is intended to allow authorities to evaluate the system and complete the connection of all vehicle fueling stations in the governorate.

It will also give vehicle owners who have not yet obtained or installed the required electronic sticker an opportunity to complete the necessary procedures during the pilot phase.

Three Government Bodies Coordinate the Project

The Ministry of Petroleum developed the system in coordination with the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.

The three ministries are working together to apply digital technologies to fuel distribution oversight and strengthen governance across the petroleum products supply chain.

The initiative is also intended to help authorities address unlawful practices and improve the efficiency of fuel distribution operations.

Electronic Stickers Enable Data-Based Monitoring

At the core of the system is the electronic vehicle sticker issued through the traffic units affiliated with the Ministry of Interior.

The system will read and compile vehicle refueling data, enabling authorities to follow petroleum products as they move through different stages of the supply chain until they reach end consumers.

Analyzing these records will help identify consumption patterns that may require further review and provide additional support for inspection and monitoring teams.

Fuel Prices Remain Outside the System’s Scope

The Ministry of Petroleum clarified that the new monitoring mechanism has no connection to fuel pricing.

It will also not be used to determine the quantities of gasoline or diesel that consumers are allowed to receive.

Instead, the system is focused on strengthening oversight, improving the management of petroleum product distribution and using technology to enhance governance.

Technology Supports Stronger Fuel Governance

The digital initiative forms part of Egypt’s broader efforts to modernize the management of the petroleum sector and increase reliance on technology for monitoring distribution.

By providing authorities with more detailed information on fuel movement and consumption, the system is expected to strengthen inspection capabilities and help address irregular practices.

The ministry reiterated that the electronic monitoring project will not affect the continued provision of petroleum products to citizens, but will focus on improving the efficiency and oversight of how fuel is distributed.
