Samsung Could Take Foldables Beyond Smartphones With Rumored 17-Inch Tablet
Samsung’s next experiment in foldable technology could be much larger than a Galaxy Z Fold, as new leaks point to a 17-inch tablet designed to transform into a more compact device when folded.
The rumored product could offer an approximately 8-inch form factor in its folded state, potentially combining the workspace of a large tablet with the portability of a smaller device.
Samsung has not officially announced the product, however, and the information currently comes from unconfirmed leaks.
From Foldable Phones to Larger Screens
Samsung has spent years developing its foldable smartphone portfolio, but its display technology is capable of supporting considerably larger form factors.
Samsung Display has demonstrated experimental large-screen flexible panels on multiple occasions, including concepts that explore how foldable technology could be applied beyond smartphones.
A 17-inch foldable Galaxy Book concept has also previously appeared, although it never progressed into a commercially available product.
Two Designs Could Make the Concept Possible
The biggest question surrounding the reported tablet is how Samsung could turn a 17-inch display into an approximately 8-inch device.
One possibility involves placing the foldable screen around the exterior, allowing part of the panel to remain active while the device is closed. The disadvantage would be greater exposure of the flexible display.
Alternatively, Samsung could place the 17-inch foldable panel inside and add a separate 8-inch screen on the exterior.
That configuration could provide a more conventional user experience but would likely add components and increase production costs.
Commercial Launch Remains Uncertain
Developing the display technology does not necessarily mean Samsung will release the tablet.
The company would need to evaluate whether a large foldable can deliver sufficient advantages in portability and productivity to justify its potentially higher price and manufacturing complexity.
Samsung is also rumored to be exploring additional foldable smartphone designs as competition in the flexible-device market develops.
No release schedule has emerged for the reported 17-inch tablet, leaving the device firmly in the development and rumor stage for now.
