Binance Hack Sends Crypto Industry Into Emergency Response as Billions in Assets Are Frozen
A suspected cyberattack on Binance has triggered one of the cryptocurrency industry’s largest-ever security responses, after billions of dollars in digital assets were transferred from wallets associated with the exchange.
Binance and several industry partners have moved to contain the incident, freezing approximately $3 billion in crypto assets while investigators track the remaining funds. The broader theft has been estimated at around $6.3 billion.
Bitcoin and Ether Slide on Security Concerns
Crypto markets reacted almost immediately as news of the incident spread.
Bitcoin and Ether both moved lower, while BNB recorded a sharper decline. Reuters reported that Bitcoin touched a six-week low and Ether reached a two-month low during the early market reaction.
The shock was not limited to digital tokens, with shares of major crypto-linked companies also coming under pressure.
Billions Blocked Across the Crypto Ecosystem
The recovery effort has involved major stablecoin issuers and other blockchain companies.
Tether reported freezing nearly $1.57 billion in assets associated with the incident, while Circle froze more than $800 million. Ripple also blocked approximately $200 million, according to Binance.
The coordinated action highlights the role of issuers, exchanges and blockchain analytics companies in tracking and restricting the movement of potentially stolen digital assets.
Binance Pledges to Cover Losses
Binance has said that customer funds remain safe and that the exchange is working with authorities and industry partners to investigate the incident.
The company temporarily suspended some activity as a precaution and is carrying out security checks before restoring normal withdrawal operations. Binance co-founder Yi He said the company would cover the hacking losses.
North Korea Link Under Investigation
Blockchain intelligence firms have identified similarities between the Binance incident and previous major attacks attributed to North Korean-linked hacking groups.
TRM Labs and Chainalysis have assessed with high confidence that North Korea was behind the attack, while Binance continues its own investigation and coordination with law enforcement.
The scale of the incident is likely to intensify scrutiny of centralized crypto exchanges, particularly around wallet security, transaction controls and the ability to contain large-scale attacks.
