Malaysia Emerges as a Key Destination for SoftBank

SoftBank is exploring a major expansion in Malaysia that could involve as much as $50 billion in technology investments, according to comments from Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

The proposed projects would cover artificial intelligence, next-generation technologies and data-center infrastructure, with potential sites identified in Sarawak and other parts of the country.

Data Center Demand Drives Investment

Malaysia is positioning itself to capture the rapid growth in demand for computing infrastructure required by AI systems and cloud services.

The country has attracted large-scale commitments from global technology companies, while investments linked to data centers totaled approximately $94 billion from 2021 through the first half of 2026, based on Malaysian investment authority data.

Government Seeks More Economic Value From Tech Projects

Beyond infrastructure development, Malaysian authorities want technology investments to generate broader economic benefits by supporting local suppliers, encouraging AI adoption and creating highly skilled employment opportunities.

The government is also emphasizing workforce development as it seeks to move the country beyond traditional technology activities toward advanced technology design, development and manufacturing.

A Broader SoftBank AI Strategy

The potential Malaysian investment forms part of SoftBank’s broader push into AI infrastructure and advanced computing.

Earlier this month, SoftBank signed a framework agreement with Grab and Petroleum Sarawak to explore an AI infrastructure and digital services platform in Sarawak. The agreement, however, does not constitute confirmation of the proposed $50 billion investment.

Investment Details Remain Under Development

Despite the headline figure, important details have yet to be disclosed, including the implementation schedule, financing structure, investment phases and targeted operating capacity.

Malaysia’s ambition to become a leading AI economy by 2030 could provide SoftBank with an opportunity to expand its footprint in Southeast Asia as regional competition for AI and data-center investment intensifies.
