Digital Gold Investment in Egypt: Gold Funds, Approved Apps and Safer Ways to Save
Investing in gold in Egypt is no longer limited to purchasing physical bars and coins. Investment funds and digital platforms have created additional ways for individuals to gain exposure to gold with varying amounts of money. However, choosing the right product requires distinguishing between regulated gold investment funds and digital services that facilitate direct gold purchases, as the two models differ in their legal structure, investor rights, fees and associated risks.
Gold Investment Funds in Egypt
According to a statement issued by Egypt’s Financial Regulatory Authority (FRA) on May 6, 2025, the regulator had approved three gold investment funds for public subscription: AZ-Gold, the gold investment fund managed by Al Ahly Financial Investments Management, and Beltone Evolve Gold Investment Fund. The authority reported that approximately 200,000 investors had invested a combined EGP 2.1 billion in these funds at the time. These figures should not be treated as current statistics for October 2026 without more recent official confirmation.
Gold fund investors purchase investment certificates representing their holdings in a fund rather than buying individual bars or coins directly. The fund manager manages the underlying assets according to the disclosed investment policy. In Egypt, this activity falls under Capital Market Law No. 95 of 1992 and related regulatory requirements covering eligible metals, authorized trading counterparties, custody, insurance and risk disclosure. Regulatory approval does not guarantee profits or protect investors from losses caused by gold price fluctuations.
Digital Platforms: Funds Versus Direct Gold Ownership
Digital services also allow customers to buy, sell and monitor gold through mobile applications. One example is Thndr Gold, launched by Egyptian investment platform Thndr in June 2026. The service provides access to 24-karat gold through the app, with customer holdings displayed in grams. Published information states that the service charges a 1% fee on each purchase and sale transaction.
Orange Egypt has also introduced a digital gold trading service through a partnership with mnGm, announced in September 2025. The service is accessible through the My Orange application and Orange Cash wallet. These examples illustrate why the term “digital gold” requires careful interpretation: it can refer to investment fund certificates or to services facilitating purchases linked to physical gold. The presence of a product within a familiar application does not, by itself, establish that every service offered through that application is covered by the same regulatory framework.
How to Choose a Gold Investment App
Investors should first identify the legal and financial structure of the product. Thndr, for example, provides access to gold funds regulated by the FRA, according to its help center. Fees, minimum investment amounts and redemption arrangements vary by fund, making it important to compare the relevant documentation before investing.
Before transferring money, users should verify the company and relevant licenses through official records, review the fund prospectus or product terms, and understand purchase and selling fees, order execution schedules and withdrawal conditions. Where physical gold is involved, they should also establish who is responsible for custody and insurance and whether physical delivery is available. The FRA has explicitly warned that registration of gold suppliers or custodians for investment funds does not automatically authorize those companies to sell gold directly to the public.
Investment Risks and a Disciplined Savings Plan
Digital access and low entry thresholds can make gold saving more convenient, but they do not remove investment risk. Gold prices fluctuate, and the value of an investment in Egypt may also be affected by the exchange rate, the difference between buying and selling prices, and platform or fund fees. Gold should therefore not be treated as a guaranteed source of returns or as a substitute for cash needed to cover immediate expenses.
A disciplined approach starts with a recurring savings amount that fits the investor’s income and financial commitments. Comparing fund costs with direct gold ownership, recording transaction fees, avoiding borrowing to invest and maintaining an emergency cash reserve can help reduce avoidable risks. The choice between fund certificates and physical gold ultimately depends on the savings horizon, liquidity needs, costs and the specific rights attached to the product.
