Egypt and Russia Move to Activate Russian Industrial Zone in Ain Sokhna
Egypt and Russia are moving the long-planned Russian Industrial Zone from the planning stage toward implementation, as officials from both countries discussed the steps required to begin operations within the Suez Canal Economic Zone.
The discussions took place during a meeting between Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Maxim Oreshkin, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Russian Presidential Administration and Russia’s Special Representative for Financial and Economic Cooperation with BRICS countries.
The meeting also followed Oreshkin’s reception by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi during his first visit to Egypt.
Egypt and Russia Accelerate Industrial Zone Implementation
The talks focused on activating the industrial zone following the appointment of an industrial developer in July 2026 and accelerating the project’s implementation.
The two sides also discussed expanding the scope of cooperation to include heavy industries, automotive manufacturing, digital transformation and artificial intelligence.
No official date has yet been announced for the launch of the industrial zone.
Project Dates Back to 2018
The Russian Industrial Zone was originally established under an intergovernmental agreement signed in 2018.
The initial plan covered 5.25 million square meters in East Port Said, with an estimated investment value of $7 billion and a 50-year framework.
The current phase focuses on a 50-hectare site, equivalent to around 500,000 square meters, near Ain Sokhna Port.
The land is being developed under a long-term usufruct agreement finalized in May 2025, while tax and customs incentives have been set for 49 years.
Crystal Group has been selected as the developer, operating under a one-stop-shop model.
Design and construction activities are expected to take place between 2026 and 2029, with operations targeted to begin in 2030.
Egypt Expands Industrial and Digital Cooperation with Russia
The project has undergone several changes since its initial announcement, including adjustments to its investment value and implementation timeline.
The development is now expected to support a broader range of industrial activities, including heavy manufacturing and automotive production, while also incorporating digital transformation and AI-related cooperation.
The expansion could strengthen the role of the Suez Canal Economic Zone as a platform for industrial investment and international supply chains.
Broader Investment Developments
The developments surrounding the Russian Industrial Zone come as Egypt continues to attract international investment across manufacturing, logistics and technology.
The government has increasingly focused on developing industrial zones linked to major ports and transportation corridors, aiming to strengthen domestic production and expand Egypt’s role as a regional trade and logistics hub.
