Apple and Meta Partner to Bring Muse Spark Open AI Model to Mac
Apple and Meta have announced a rare technology partnership to bring Meta’s new open-source artificial intelligence model, Muse Spark Open, to Apple’s Mac computers, marking a new step in both companies’ efforts to strengthen their positions in the rapidly evolving AI market.
Muse Spark Open Optimized for Mac Studio
The two technology giants plan to optimize Muse Spark Open, a downloadable version of Meta’s latest AI technology, to run efficiently on Apple’s Mac Studio desktop computers.
Meta describes Muse Spark Open as its most efficient and open model to date. The system is designed to assist with software development and power AI agents capable of independently carrying out complex tasks.
Meta said the technology will be available under limited commercial terms, allowing many developers to use the model free of charge.
Apple Expands Its AI Partnerships
The collaboration represents another step in Apple’s strategy of working with companies that have more advanced artificial intelligence models as it seeks to strengthen AI capabilities across its devices.
The partnership is particularly notable given the historically tense relationship between Apple and Meta. The companies have previously clashed over Apple’s app policies, while Meta has recruited AI specialists from Apple and launched virtual-reality products that compete with Apple’s Vision Pro.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the achievement was made possible through cooperation with Apple CEO John Ternus, who took over the position in September.
Ternus highlighted the ability to run and efficiently scale a model as advanced as Muse Spark Open directly from a desktop setup.
Meta Strengthens Its Open AI Strategy
Meta has increasingly positioned open AI models as a key part of its strategy in the global artificial intelligence race.
Zuckerberg and other technology executives, including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, have supported open models that users can download, customize and run on their own hardware.
This approach differs from leading closed models developed by companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI, which are proprietary and cannot be customized in the same way.
Meta has also promoted its open models as an important US alternative to Chinese AI competitors such as DeepSeek, although the company has also introduced some closed models.
Running Advanced AI Models Locally
Apple has emphasized the privacy benefits of running artificial intelligence models locally on its powerful chips rather than sending personal data to cloud-based systems.
According to Apple, a cluster of two to four Mac Studio computers equipped with the new M5 Ultra chip can provide enough computing power to run some of the most advanced AI models.
Earlier this year, former Apple CEO Tim Cook said demand for the Mac mini and Mac Studio had increased significantly among consumers interested in running AI models locally at home.
Apple Accelerates Its AI Strategy
Apple has been working to strengthen its position following a challenging start in the artificial intelligence race.
Earlier this year, the company partnered with Google to use Gemini models to power its redesigned AI-enabled Siri assistant, which was launched last month.
The latest collaboration with Meta adds another major partnership to Apple’s AI strategy while providing Meta with an additional platform to expand the reach of its open artificial intelligence ecosystem.
