AI Investments Buffer Energy Shock, Sustaining Global Growth Around 3%
Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), stated that massive investment inflows into artificial intelligence infrastructure are playing a pivotal role in keeping global economic growth around 3%, thereby offsetting the negative impacts caused by energy supply disruptions.
An Investment Boom Supporting Asian Economies
Speaking at the IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok, Georgieva explained that the investment momentum in advanced technologies has delivered a strong boost to capital expenditure and overall demand. She noted that this recovery directly benefits Asian nations manufacturing tech components and equipment—such as semiconductors, data center hardware, and electronic devices—with countries like Thailand among the primary beneficiaries of rising global demand.
Promising Growth Gains for Asia
According to IMF estimates, AI investments are expected to boost economic growth in advanced Asian economies by 0.5 to 1 percentage point, while the increase in emerging Asian economies is projected to range between 0.2 and 0.8 percentage points. These figures highlight the positive impact and vital integration between spending on digital infrastructure and global supply chains.
Labor Market Challenges and Converting Investment into Productivity
Despite these positive indicators, Georgieva warned of future risks and challenges associated with AI, particularly its direct impacts on labor markets, education, tax revenues, and expected shifts in income distribution between labor and capital.
In conclusion, she emphasized that sustaining these economic gains relies entirely on countries' ability to translate these massive technological investments into genuine productivity gains, while broadening technology adoption across diverse sectors and workforces.
