Apple Expands Smart Home Push Through LG Partnership
Apple is preparing to expand its presence in the smart home market through a partnership with LG to develop a new range of connected home devices, including smart locks, a thermostat, a connected doorbell and indoor and outdoor security cameras, alongside a new smart home control hub designed to connect these products with Apple devices and services.
New Smart Home Devices With LG
The expected lineup includes a smart lock for securing residential doors, a thermostat for temperature control and a connected doorbell, as well as a range of security cameras. The camera lineup is expected to include models for indoor and outdoor use, along with a floodlight-equipped camera designed to provide security coverage around the home.
LG’s new devices are expected to be unveiled next week, although the companies could announce them before commercial sales begin, meaning the retail launch may follow at a later stage. The products will carry the LG brand despite being developed in cooperation with Apple, allowing the South Korean company to draw on its experience in home appliances and consumer electronics while Apple integrates the products into its smart home ecosystem.
The partnership also gives Apple an opportunity to expand into categories where it has so far had a limited presence, including smart locks, doorbells, security cameras and thermostats. The move would broaden Apple’s role in connected homes beyond its existing hardware, including iPhones, tablets, watches and computers.
A Central Hub for Home Control
Apple is also working on a new smart home hub that is expected to serve as a link between these devices and other connected products in the home. The hub is expected to feature a roughly 6-inch square display and can be placed on a desk or mounted on a wall, giving users a single point from which to manage household devices.
The development of the hub reflects Apple’s move beyond its traditional role of providing software that connects devices toward a broader ecosystem built around dedicated hardware for home control, security and management. The device is expected to bring different household functions together through a single interface connected to Apple’s broader ecosystem.
By combining the hub with connected security and home-management products, Apple is seeking to create a more unified experience for users. The approach would allow a wider range of household functions to be managed through one connected system rather than through separate devices and services.
Apple Takes Aim at a Broader Smart Home Market
The move would put Apple in more direct competition with Amazon, which has an established presence in the smart home market through a broad range of connected devices and services, including Ring security cameras and home control products.
By combining a control hub with security devices and home management tools, Apple is seeking to offer a more integrated experience in which users can manage a wide range of household functions through one ecosystem linked to its devices and services. The move comes as Apple expands into areas beyond its core products, focusing on connected hardware and services that can form a broader ecosystem around the user.
