A Strategic Plan to Boost the Digital Economy: Minister of ICT Chairs Telecom Industry Committee Meeting

Eng. Raafat Hendy, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, chaired a high-level meeting with the newly formed Telecom Industry Committee of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA). The meeting aimed to formulate new mechanisms for sector development, overcome challenges, and leverage available opportunities to support Egypt's economic growth.

Unprecedented Growth and Promising Digital Indicators

The Minister of ICT highlighted an exceptional sector growth rate of 19.3% during FY 2025/2026, solidifying its role as a primary driver of economic growth. This progress relies on infrastructure enhancements and the launch of the Spectrum Strategy (2026–2030). He noted a 124% surge in digital exports since 2018, reaching $7.4 billion in 2025. Additionally, he emphasized the growth of the "Digital Egypt" platform, which offered 250 digital services by last September, aiming for 270 by year-end and 400 by 2030.

Local Manufacturing and Electronics Localization

Local manufacturing saw significant progress, with over 10 million mobile phones produced in 2025 compared to 3.3 million in 2024. The Minister explained that the mobile phone governance system aims to protect local products and expand manufacturing to include accessories, fiber optic cables, and semiconductors, establishing Egypt as a regional hub for electronics manufacturing.

Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, and Digital Safety

The meeting stressed that AI and data centers are fundamental pillars for digital sovereignty and productivity enhancement. Discussions reviewed the pilot implementation of the "Digital Identity" system to streamline government and financial transactions. Regarding cyber safety, the ministry continues public awareness efforts through platforms like "Waai.net" and "Et تطمن" services, alongside drafting a new Digital Safety Law.

NTRA Framework and Committee Recommendations

Eng. Mohamed Shamroukh, CEO of NTRA, outlined three core focus areas: data centers, local manufacturing, and digital identity. The committee concluded with key recommendations emphasizing the expansion of local telecom equipment manufacturing, cloud computing services development, and the establishment of effective mechanisms to support national products.
