Alkan Auto is preparing to officially launch the BAIC X55 REEV in Egypt on October 7, adding another range-extended electric SUV to a market where carmakers are increasingly using the technology to bridge the gap between conventional petrol cars and fully electric vehicles.

The launch will expand BAIC’s local X55 lineup beyond the conventional petrol-powered version already sold in Egypt, while giving the Chinese brand an entry into the growing REEV segment.

Alkan Auto, BAIC’s official distributor in Egypt and part of Egyptian International Motors Group, is expected to reveal the locally offered specifications, trim levels, prices and booking and delivery details during the official launch event.

The move comes as REEV technology gains greater visibility in Egypt, with several brands introducing vehicles that promise electric driving while retaining a petrol engine to generate electricity when the battery needs additional energy.

X55 REEV Uses Electricity for Driving and Petrol to Extend Range

Unlike a conventional hybrid, the BAIC X55 REEV is designed around an electric propulsion system.

The electric motor provides the driving force, while the petrol engine primarily works as a generator to support the battery and extend the vehicle’s overall driving range.

Specifications reported for the model in an overseas market include a 1.5-liter petrol engine producing 105 hp and 132 Nm of torque, paired with an electric motor producing 160 kW, equivalent to around 215 hp, and 310 Nm of torque.

However, these figures should not yet be treated as the final Egyptian specifications.

Alkan Auto is due to disclose the exact powertrain, battery, electric range, total driving range and equipment specifications for the Egyptian-market X55 REEV at the October 7 launch.

REEV Cars Are Becoming a Distinct Segment in Egypt

The arrival of the X55 REEV reflects a wider change taking place in Egypt’s new-car market during 2026.

Range-extended electric vehicles have begun appearing alongside conventional hybrids, plug-in hybrids and fully electric models, with manufacturers positioning REEV technology as an alternative for drivers who want an electric driving experience without depending entirely on public charging infrastructure.

Several REEV models are already available locally, with some manufacturers claiming combined ranges exceeding 1,000 kilometers using a fully charged battery and a full tank of fuel.

The technology is particularly relevant to Egypt because it addresses one of the main concerns surrounding full EV adoption: long-distance travel when charging points may not always be readily available.

The petrol engine provides an onboard source of electricity once battery charge falls, reducing dependence on finding a charging station during longer journeys.

BAIC Already Sells the Petrol X55 in Egypt

The REEV model will join a nameplate already familiar to Egyptian buyers.

BAIC currently offers the conventional X55 locally with a 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine producing 185 hp and 305 Nm of torque, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and front-wheel drive.

The existing X55 measures 4,620 mm in length, 1,886 mm in width and 1,680 mm in height, with a 2,735 mm wheelbase.

It is currently offered in three equipment grades in Egypt.

Adding an REEV version could allow Alkan Auto to position the X55 across two different powertrain categories without introducing an entirely unfamiliar model name.

Price Will Be Crucial to the X55 REEV’s Position

The biggest unanswered question is pricing.

Egypt’s REEV segment is becoming more competitive, and the X55 will enter a market that already includes range-extended SUVs from several Chinese manufacturers.

That makes the difference between the X55 REEV’s price and the conventional X55 particularly important.

A competitive premium could give buyers an opportunity to move toward electric propulsion without accepting the charging dependence of a battery-electric vehicle. A substantially higher price, however, would put the model against larger or more powerful REEV alternatives already available locally.

Battery capacity and electric-only range will also matter because they determine how often owners can use the X55 as an electric vehicle without activating its petrol generator.

Those details will only become clear once Alkan Auto unveils the Egyptian specification.

October 7 Will Reveal More Than a New BAIC Model

The X55 REEV launch is therefore significant beyond the arrival of another SUV.

Egyptian buyers now face an increasingly complex choice between petrol, conventional hybrid, plug-in hybrid, range-extended electric and fully electric vehicles.

REEV technology is emerging as one of the more interesting options because it attempts to combine two characteristics that have traditionally been difficult to achieve together: electric propulsion for everyday driving and the flexibility of liquid fuel for longer journeys.

For BAIC, the October 7 launch will test whether that proposition can work in one of the most competitive parts of Egypt’s automotive market.

The decisive numbers will not be available until the launch: the X55 REEV’s battery capacity, electric-only range, total range and — above all — its Egyptian price. Together, those figures will determine whether BAIC’s latest SUV becomes a meaningful new option for buyers considering the transition away from conventional petrol cars.
