WADICO and Huawei Sign MoU to Deploy Digital Power and Clean Energy Technologies in Support of Mining Operations
As part of their continued collaboration, Huawei signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Al-Wadi Al-Jadid Company for Mineral Resources and Oil Shale (Wadico), on the sidelines of Egypt Mining Forum 2026, held under the auspices of H.E. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and organized by the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources.
Under the MoU, Huawei will provide the technical solutions required to develop a Microgrid based on renewable energy technologies, with a total load capacity of 0.600 MW, at WADICO’s site in Aswan Governorate, with commercial operations targeted to commence on September 15, 2027. The solutions will include solar power technologies, battery energy storage systems, and digital solutions for energy monitoring and management, in addition to training and knowledge transfer, supporting a more efficient and reliable power supply at the site.
The project aims to reduce diesel fuel consumption and emissions, contributing to greater energy efficiency and operational continuity. The collaboration will also explore solutions to electrify mining operations, including electric vehicles, vehicle batteries, and charging solutions, supporting greater reliance on clean energy sources across the operational ecosystem.
Commenting on the agreement, Geologist Reda Selim, Chairman and Managing Director of WADICO, said: “This collaboration represents an important step in WADICO’s efforts to develop its mining operations and enhance their sustainability. WADICO is among the first mining companies in Egypt to adopt the use of solar energy at its operational sites, driven by our belief in the importance of deploying clean energy solutions to support operational continuity and enhance efficiency. Through our long-term collaboration with Huawei, we look forward to leveraging its expertise in digital power and renewable energy to develop solutions that support 24-hour power availability at mining sites, particularly in remote areas. We also look forward to expanding this collaboration with Huawei in the future to deploy solar and clean energy solutions across WADICO’s other sites, supporting the company’s growth plans and advancing its move toward more efficient and sustainable mining operations.”
Mr. Tony Bu, CEO of Digital Power at Huawei Egypt, also stated: “Our collaboration with WADICO presents an opportunity to leverage Huawei’s global expertise in digital power and apply it to the needs of Egypt’s mining sector. Huawei has extensive experience in developing energy solutions for mining sites and remote locations, including solutions that integrate solar power, energy storage, and conventional power sources to enhance power supply reliability and reduce reliance on diesel generators. Through this collaboration, we aim to bring this experience to the Egyptian market and adapt it to the specific requirements of mining operations and remote sites, opening the door to new applications of digital power across the sector while supporting greater energy efficiency, operational reliability, and sustainability.”
Huawei’s collaboration with WADICO comes as the mining sector continues to focus on improving operational efficiency and developing energy infrastructure, alongside greater reliance on clean energy sources and digital technologies. Through this partnership, Huawei is expanding the application of its digital power expertise into the mining sector for the first time, through solutions that combine renewable energy, energy storage, power electronics, and digital technologies to meet the needs of mining operations, particularly at remote sites.
This collaboration reflects Huawei’s focus on leveraging its global digital power expertise to support the development of mining operations in Egypt and exploring new opportunities to apply clean energy, digitalization, and electrification solutions, contributing to greater energy efficiency, operational reliability, and sustainability.
