From Assistants to Colleagues: Microsoft Unveils Autonomous Copilot Agents to Work While You’re Away
Your next workplace colleague might not have a desk or draw a salary, yet will possess an identity, system permissions, and tasks executed even while you are away from your screen. That is the reality Microsoft is nearing with a new generation of artificial intelligence agents—no longer confined to helping you get work done, but now capable of accessing corporate systems and carrying out workflows autonomously.
The tech giant announced significant upgrades to its Copilot platform, introducing a new agent dubbed "Autopilot," described as an always-on, proactive, and personalized agent capable of running tasks continuously in the background.
From Assistant to 'Colleague'
The shift goes well beyond branding. The new Copilot update allows users to delegate end-to-end tasks to "Cowork," while its "Code" tool enables the creation of applications and dashboards using natural-language prompts.
Meanwhile, Cowork moves far beyond generating text. It handles multi-step workflows—searching enterprise repositories, drafting documents, managing files, scheduling meetings, and preparing emails—while requiring explicit user approval before executing sensitive actions.
Completing the lineup, Autopilot brings persistent continuity, operating in the background even when users are away from their computers.
