Orange Egypt Plans Shared Solar Power Plants With Telecom Operators
Orange Egypt is preparing to collaborate with other telecom operators in the local market to establish shared solar power plants, as part of efforts to support telecom networks with renewable energy and reduce reliance on imported energy sources.
Hisham Mehran, CEO of Orange Egypt, said during a session at the second day of FDC Summit 2026 that the company is open to developing a joint project involving three or four telecom operators to establish a renewable energy farm.
He explained that the proposed initiative could help reduce dependence on imported energy and lower foreign currency spending on energy imports.
Mehran also said that potential cooperation among telecom operators in cloud computing remains under discussion, with opportunities to build on existing shared infrastructure and expand it in the future.
The Orange Egypt CEO highlighted several potential applications of artificial intelligence across industries, healthcare and education. AI could help improve production efficiency, support remote medical diagnosis and enable the development of educational content based on the concept of a virtual teacher.
He also pointed to an AI-powered service implemented by Orange Egypt at Cairo International Airport, which has served thousands of travelers. The company is also working with government entities on public services using AI interfaces to make services faster and more accessible to citizens.
Regarding 5G networks, Mehran noted that the expansion of AI applications requires advanced infrastructure, including high-capacity data centers and high-speed connectivity. He added that Orange Egypt is preparing to receive new spectrum starting next year, supporting the development of applications based on 5G technology.
According to Mehran, 5G could enable advanced applications such as remote operations, real-time network performance monitoring and enhanced infrastructure for AI-powered services.
The statements were made during FDC Summit 2026, which focuses on Egypt’s digital economy and brings together government officials, technology experts and representatives of global, regional and local technology companies to discuss AI, data centers, cybersecurity, cloud computing and digital infrastructure.
