Huawei Urges Chinese AI Firms to Accelerate AI Development

Eric Xu, Chairman of Huawei, has called on Chinese artificial intelligence companies to accelerate the development of AI technologies and strengthen their technical capabilities amid intensifying global competition in the sector.

Xu said Chinese researchers should speed up the development of AI technologies to better understand and address the risks associated with the rapid advancement of the technology.

According to the Financial Times, Xu’s remarks came just days after major technology companies called for a coordinated slowdown in AI development following serious warnings about the safety of advanced AI systems.

The comments also came as Huawei unveiled updates to its AI chip roadmap, as the Chinese technology giant seeks to build an alternative to Nvidia’s dominant AI computing platform amid continued U.S. restrictions on exports of advanced AI chips to China.

On Thursday, Huawei announced that its Ascend 960DT chip, designed for AI model training, is scheduled to enter the market in the first quarter of 2027. The company also said that an inference-focused chip, designed to run AI models and process user queries, will be launched in the third quarter of the same year.

Huawei said the new chips are expected to deliver computing performance twice that of its current flagship product, highlighting the company’s efforts to expand its AI computing capabilities and strengthen its position in the global AI chip market.
