Ericsson Outlines AI”s Dual Impact on Telecom Networks and Advances 5G Rollout in Egypt

Dori Shakour, Head of Network Solutions for North Middle East at Ericsson, has detailed how Artificial Intelligence will fundamentally transform telecommunications networks. Speaking at a recent press conference, he outlined a dual-track approach for AI integration, discussed the long-term roadmap for full network automation, and provided key updates on Ericsson’s strategic 5G partnerships within the Egyptian market.

The Dual Path of AI Integration

Shakour explained that AI will reshape telecom operations through two primary avenues:

Core Network Optimization: AI will be utilized to optimize the network's internal operations, significantly improving data processing, energy efficiency, and overall service capabilities. This is particularly critical during demand spikes, where AI can dynamically scale network performance to meet rapid operational needs.

Enabling Next-Gen Applications: The second track focuses on upgrading network infrastructure to support the complex requirements of emerging technologies. Advanced networks will be essential to handle data-heavy use cases such as "AI Classrooms" and Extended Reality (XR) applications.

The Journey to Level 5 Automation

Addressing the evolution of network management, Shakour outlined the industry's progression across automation levels, ranging from Level 0 to Level 5:

Current Operator Status: Telecommunications operators are currently scattered across foundational levels, with many operating at Level 1 or slightly above.

The Long-Term Goal: The ultimate industry objective is to reach Level 5, which represents fully autonomous networks capable of self-management and self-optimization. However, Shakour cautioned that transitioning to complete automation is a highly complex, long-term endeavor that will not happen overnight.

5G Expansion in Egypt and Global AI Trials

Ericsson is actively advancing both current-generation deployments and future-facing technological trials:

Egyptian 5G Partnerships: In the local market, Ericsson is collaborating on 5G network rollouts with three major telecommunications providers: Vodafone Egypt, e& Egypt, and Telecom Egypt.

Global AI Pilots: On the international front, Ericsson is currently executing approximately 15 global trials focused on embedding AI into telecommunications networks in partnership with international tech firms. This reflects the company's standard R&D strategy of rigorously testing emerging technologies on a global scale before proceeding with widespread commercial integration.
