AI Semiconductor Boom Drives South Korea”s Exports Past 2025 Total by September, Eyes $1 Trillion Milestone

South Korea's year-to-date exports through early September have surpassed $709.4 billion, eclipsing the country's total exports for the entirety of 2025 ($709.3 billion), propelled by robust and sustained global demand for AI-related semiconductor chips.

Data from the Korea Customs Service revealed that the South Korean economy—Asia's fourth-largest—is on track to set a new export record in 2026. The country is poised to potentially cross the $1 trillion mark in early December, which would make South Korea the fourth nation to reach this milestone globally, following the United States, China, and Germany.

Semiconductors Drive the Export Boom

Semiconductors serve as the primary growth engine for South Korea's exports, fueled by a boom in global investments in AI infrastructure and a surging demand for memory chips.

Between January and August, semiconductor exports skyrocketed by approximately 169.6% compared to the same period last year, reaching nearly $281 billion. This segment alone now accounts for roughly 41% of the country's total exports.

This massive leap comes as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, South Korea's leading memory chip manufacturers, capitalize on rising chip prices and persistent supply shortages driven by escalating AI-related demand.

August data further underscores the strength of this trend. Semiconductor exports for the month surged 209% year-on-year to around $46.65 billion—the highest monthly level on record—while overall exports climbed 68.7% to $98.25 billion.

Automobiles Buck the Trend

However, not all sectors have participated in the export boom at the same pace. Exports of passenger cars, South Korea's second-largest export category, declined by about 4% from January to August compared to the previous year.

This divergence highlights the increasing reliance of South Korea's export strength on the technology sector, particularly semiconductors, at a time when other industrial segments are navigating more challenging economic conditions.
