Japan Eyes $60 Billion Investment to Quadruple AI Data Center Capacity by 2033
Japan is set to increase its artificial intelligence (AI) data center capacity by more than fourfold over the next eight years, with investment plans estimated at approximately $60 billion for new facilities. This ambitious move is expected to cement the country's position among the world's largest AI infrastructure markets and bolster its push for greater technological sovereignty in the field.
According to a survey conducted by the Nikkei newspaper covering the plans of 26 data center operators, 22 expressed their intention to build additional AI-dedicated data centers in Japan. These upcoming projects are projected to boost total capacity from about 1.1 gigawatts at the end of 2025 to 4.9 gigawatts by 2033.
$60 Billion Price Tag for New Centers
The cost of constructing data centers in Japan averages around $16 billion per gigawatt, according to Cushman & Wakefield, bringing the total estimated construction cost for the new projects to roughly $60 billion.
However, these estimates exclude the costs of the servers and semiconductors required to operate the facilities, suggesting that the total investment tied to expanding Japan's AI infrastructure could eventually soar into the hundreds of billions of dollars.
This massive influx of capital comes at a time of surging global demand for the computing power necessary to train and run advanced AI models, coinciding with the broader expansion of global tech giants within the Japanese market.
