SK Hynix CEO Forecasts Global Memory Chip Shortage to Persist Through 2030 Amid AI Boom

Kwak Noh-jung, CEO of SK Hynix, stated that the global memory chip shortage is projected to persist through the end of 2030, emphasizing that the risks of market oversupply remain limited.

Speaking to Odaily and cited by Reuters, Kwak explained that memory chips are no longer commoditized products in the era of artificial intelligence. He affirmed that demand from AI-focused enterprises remains exceptionally strong, despite growing market concerns over a potential investment bubble in the sector.

Low Risk of Oversupply

Kwak noted that he currently sees no signs of an imminent supply glut or a broader downturn across the memory chip market.

While acknowledging that an AI industry slowdown or a peak in current demand cycles could present headwinds for semiconductor manufacturers, he stressed that upcoming industry cycles will fundamentally diverge from the boom-and-bust patterns witnessed over previous decades.

A Gradual Softening Rather than a Steep Drop

The SK Hynix chief highlighted that any future cooling in memory demand is likely to be gradual rather than the abrupt, sharp plunges experienced in prior market cycles.

Kwak’s remarks underscore the South Korean chipmaker's confidence in sustained, long-term memory demand, propelled by the relentless expansion of generative AI applications and hyperscale data center infrastructure.
