Egypt’s New Digital ID Technology Was Built Locally to Keep Citizen Data Under National Control
The technology behind Egypt’s new biometric digital identity system was developed entirely by Egyptian engineers, with its architecture designed to prevent foreign entities from accessing citizens’ data, according to cybersecurity and digital solutions company CyShield.
The local development of the platform adds a data-sovereignty dimension to Egypt’s push toward remote identity verification, as biometric authentication begins moving into telecom services and potentially, at a later stage, a broader range of digital transactions.
Mostafa Eissa, Chief Executive Officer of Digital Solutions at CyShield, said maintaining national control over citizens’ information was a central consideration in building the system.
Speaking during the launch of the electronic biometric verification platform, Eissa said the underlying technology was developed entirely by Egyptian engineers, ensuring that no foreign party is involved in accessing citizens’ data.
According to Eissa, the model gives Egypt “100% national sovereignty” over the data handled by the platform.
Digital identity raises the question of who controls the data
The issue becomes increasingly important as identity verification moves away from physical service counters and into digital channels.
A biometric identity system may need to validate highly sensitive information before allowing users to perform transactions remotely, making the location, handling and accessibility of that data a fundamental part of the infrastructure rather than simply a cybersecurity consideration.
CyShield’s approach is intended to keep that process within an Egyptian-controlled technology environment.
The company says the platform’s local development ensures that citizen data remains inside an ecosystem operating entirely under Egyptian sovereignty, without giving external technology providers access to that information.
That distinction could become more significant as the digital identity framework expands.
Egypt has initially introduced biometric verification within the telecom sector, where it can be used to support transactions that traditionally required customers to prove their identity at a branch.
The wider direction, however, is toward an infrastructure capable of supporting more end-to-end digital transactions, combining remote identity checks with electronic procedures and legally recognized e-signatures.
As that ecosystem grows, control over the underlying identity infrastructure will become as important as the services built on top of it.
For CyShield, the launch therefore represents more than the deployment of another locally developed technology platform. It is an attempt to establish a national digital identity infrastructure in which the technology, engineering expertise and control over citizen data remain within Egypt.
