National Bank of Egypt Retail Portfolio Surpasses EGP 500 Billion in Historic Q2 2026 Milestone

The National Bank of Egypt (NBE) has achieved a major milestone in its consumer banking operations, with its retail portfolio crossing the half-trillion-pound mark to reach EGP 500 billion during the second quarter of 2026.

NBE Chief Executive Officer Mohamed El-Etreby stated that the achievement reflects sustained customer trust and the success of the bank's nationwide strategy to deliver advanced financial products. The growth was supported by aggressive investments in digital infrastructure and an expanding branch network.

According to Karim Sous, NBE’s CEO of Retail Banking, the retail portfolio grew by EGP 62.5 billion since December 2025. The bank's total customer base has now exceeded 22 million, cementing its position as the largest retail banking portfolio in the Egyptian market. Total deposits concurrently swelled to approximately EGP 6.1 trillion, with individual retail deposits accounting for EGP 4.2 trillion.

Strategic Highlights & Digital Initiatives

Financial Inclusion & Accessibility: NBE expanded its physical footprint to 707 branches, including 50 solar-powered locations and 108 branches equipped for customers with disabilities. The ATM network surpassed 7,520 machines.

Digital Village & Payments: The bank launched a "Digital Village" initiative in partnership with Visa under the Central Bank of Egypt's (CBE) sponsorship. Additionally, the "Cash Away" service—allowing cash withdrawals at gas stations and hypermarkets—saw a 64% growth in usage.

Expatriate & International Services: NBE introduced a new digital "Visa On Arrival" stamp system, launched a USD-denominated Platinum Visa debit card for international use, and joined the CBE’s initiative allowing Egyptian expatriates to update their banking data via embassies abroad.
