Malaysia Drafts Comprehensive E-Commerce Law to Enforce Platform and Seller Accountability
The Malaysian government is actively drafting a new e-commerce law to replace the existing legislative framework, aiming to significantly enhance regulation, oversight, and legal accountability for digital platforms, online sellers, and consumers.
Minister of Domestic Trade and Costs of Living, Armizan Mohd Ali, explained that the upcoming legislation will establish a much more comprehensive framework to define the specific legal responsibilities of all parties operating within the e-commerce ecosystem. He noted that current regulations are largely limited to validating the legality of digital transactions, leaving the Ministry without the integrated legal authority needed to holistically regulate digital trade or assign clear liability.
The move aligns with a recent directive from Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who emphasized the urgent need to accelerate the drafting process to keep pace with the exponential growth of Malaysia's digital business sector.
