S&P Dow Jones Indices Retains Egypt’s ”Emerging Market” Status for 2026, Dispelling Downgrade Fears

S&P Dow Jones Indices has maintained Egypt's classification within the "Emerging Markets" category following the conclusion of its 2026 market classification consultation, according to a statement issued by the Egyptian Exchange (EGX) on Friday. This decision dispels recent concerns over a potential downgrade to the lowest classification tier.

Omar Radwan, Chairman of the EGX, stated in the release that the consultation results "highlight the accelerated achievements Egypt is making to improve the investment climate." He noted that the decision reflects the resilience of the Egyptian economy and its capacity to navigate regional and international challenges.

Reversing the Downgrade Proposal

Last June, S&P Dow Jones Indices proposed downgrading the Egyptian equity market from an Emerging Market to a Frontier Market, the lowest of its three classifications (behind Developed and Emerging Markets).

At the time, the institution cited that despite some improvements recorded since July 2024, the Egyptian market still faced challenges related to market structure, difficulties in foreign investor accessibility, continued economic volatility, and instability in certain institutional indicators.

Radwan explained that retaining the current status will solidify "the confidence of global financial institutions and investment funds in the depth and robustness of the Egyptian market, while supporting its ability to attract further foreign inflows." He reaffirmed the EGX's commitment to continuing its institutional and legislative development to enhance market accessibility, boost depth and liquidity, expand the investor base, and upgrade its technological and operational infrastructure.

He further emphasized that the ongoing reform of the country's capital market system "does not solely aim to maintain the current classification, but rather to elevate the market's level and enhance its ability to reach more advanced classifications and positions in the future."

Strong Performance and Key Reforms

This positive development comes amid strong performance for the Egyptian Exchange this year, with the benchmark EGX30 index surging by more than 30% year-to-date, despite the broader repercussions of the Iran war.

Recent key reforms implemented in the Egyptian market include:

Launching the derivatives market.

Activating short-selling mechanisms.

Expanding digital transformation and upgrading the market's technological infrastructure.

Introducing new services and products for investors, while continuously improving trading mechanisms to boost efficiency and liquidity.
