Cursor has launched Origin, a new platform for hosting and managing software projects that puts the AI-focused company in direct competition with GitHub. The platform provides developers with tools for code hosting, collaboration, repository management and pull requests, while allowing existing GitHub repositories to be synchronized with Origin. The launch comes as GitHub faces growing criticism over outages and service performance, giving Cursor an opening to promote an alternative as AI becomes increasingly embedded in software development.

Cursor Expands Beyond AI Code Editing

Origin is designed to cover several of the core functions developers have traditionally relied on GitHub for, including storing code in repositories, browsing and editing codebases, collaborating with other developers and managing pull requests.

The move expands Cursor's role beyond its established AI-powered code editor. By adding code hosting and collaboration capabilities, the company is seeking to cover a larger portion of the software development lifecycle rather than remaining focused primarily on helping developers write code.

Origin Targets the Agent Era

Cursor also plans to introduce features built around what it describes as an "Agent Native" approach, with deeper integration of AI agents into software development workflows.

The company has not disclosed the full scope of those capabilities, but it has indicated that it is working toward a broader ecosystem of applications designed to support programming operations within Origin.

Origin Can Work Alongside GitHub

Despite positioning Origin as a competitor to GitHub, Cursor is not requiring developers to abandon their existing repositories.

Users can connect their GitHub accounts and select repositories to synchronize with Origin, allowing them to move code between the two platforms and continue working with projects already hosted on GitHub.

This approach gives developers and teams greater flexibility and suggests that Cursor is initially seeking to add a new layer to existing development infrastructure rather than immediately forcing users to replace the tools they already depend on.

GitHub Outages Create an Opening

Origin's arrival comes at a particularly sensitive moment for GitHub. The platform experienced a global outage on the same day that lasted more than six hours and affected several core functions, with high error rates reported during the disruption.

GitHub has also faced other outages and performance problems in the past, contributing to frustration among some developers and creating an opportunity for competing platforms in the code-hosting market.

For Cursor, the timing provides a significant opportunity to position Origin as an alternative at a moment when some developers may be reconsidering their dependence on a single platform for repository hosting and development operations.

Breaking into GitHub's market will nevertheless be difficult.

GitHub data indicates that the platform had approximately 180 million developers as of last October, making it the world's largest platform for hosting source code.

Its position is also supported by more than repository hosting. GitHub has built a broad ecosystem of users, development tools and integrations that has become deeply embedded in the software development lifecycle of both individual developers and companies.

AI Is Reshaping Software Development Infrastructure

The significance of Origin extends beyond the arrival of another GitHub competitor. Its launch reflects a broader effort to rethink software development infrastructure around the growing role of artificial intelligence.

Cursor already provides an AI-powered development environment, while Origin adds hosting, collaboration and code-management capabilities. Together, those products give the company a way to participate in more stages of the software development process.
