Zoho brings its “digital workforce” vision to FDC Summit 2026
For years, artificial intelligence inside business software has mostly played the role of an assistant.
It could summarize an email, suggest the next sales action, draft a response or help an employee find information faster.
Zoho is now pushing that model further.
The company is turning its Zia artificial intelligence platform into what it describes as a digital workforce, built around autonomous agents capable of taking responsibility for specific business tasks rather than simply helping humans complete them.
That shift gives Zoho a very different story to bring to FDC Summit 2026, where it is confirmed as an exhibitor. While much of the summit’s technology discussion is expected to focus on cybersecurity, infrastructure and AI platforms, Zoho’s presence could demonstrate what happens when AI moves directly into sales, customer service, HR and everyday enterprise operations.
From assistant to agent
The distinction may sound small, but it changes how AI fits inside a company.
An AI assistant generally waits for instructions. An employee asks a question, requests a summary or tells the system to generate something.
An AI agent can be given a goal and allowed to determine how to achieve it within defined boundaries.
Zoho describes this progression simply: automation follows predetermined rules, assistants help people make decisions, while agents can reason about a goal and take action themselves.
That is the idea behind Zia Agents, Zoho’s platform for deploying autonomous AI agents across its business software ecosystem.
The company now offers more than 100 pre-built agents through its Agent Store, covering a portfolio that spans more than 60 Zoho applications. These agents can be used for tasks ranging from responding to emails and scheduling meetings to supporting sales, marketing and service operations.
Instead of every employee having one generic chatbot, Zoho is effectively proposing teams of specialized digital workers.
Customer service without waiting for the bot script
One of the clearest examples arrived this summer through Zoho SalesIQ.
The Summer 2026 release introduced Zia Agents designed to handle customer conversations autonomously.
Unlike traditional chatbots that follow predefined decision trees, the agents can interpret what a customer is asking, decide which information they need and retrieve data from company records, databases, uploaded documents, webhooks and both Zoho and third-party applications.
They can then attempt to resolve the issue themselves.
If the problem genuinely requires a person, the conversation can be escalated to a human employee with the relevant context already attached.
That changes the economics of customer service AI.
For years, businesses have deployed bots primarily to reduce the number of simple questions reaching contact center agents. Zoho’s newer model attempts to move from answering questions to actually completing customer-service processes.
The important difference is contained in one word: resolution.
The agent is not only expected to talk to the customer. It is expected to get something done.
HR is becoming conversational too
Zoho is taking the same approach into human resources.
In June 2026, the company introduced an updated version of Zia inside Zoho People, allowing employees and HR teams to interact with HR systems through natural-language conversations rather than navigating multiple menus and modules.
An employee may increasingly be able to ask the system for information or initiate routine tasks through conversation, while Zia works with the underlying HR data.
The development illustrates how enterprise software itself may begin to change.
Traditional business applications are built around interfaces.
Employees open a CRM, find a menu, choose a record and perform an action.
Agentic AI creates the possibility that the interface becomes secondary.
Instead, users describe what they want done, while the agent decides which application, data source or workflow it needs to use.
If that model succeeds, companies may eventually spend less time teaching employees how to navigate software and more time defining what AI agents are allowed to do.
Build your own digital employee
Zoho is not limiting the strategy to agents it develops itself.
Through Agent Studio, organizations can create their own Zia Agents, define their role and behavior, connect them to knowledge sources and give them access to APIs or business applications required to perform actions.
A company could therefore build an agent designed specifically around its own processes rather than relying only on a generic AI model.
The organization defines the instructions, tools, knowledge base, connections and guardrails.
The agent then operates inside those boundaries.
This could be particularly attractive to companies whose workflows are too specialized for an off-the-shelf AI assistant.
A financial institution, retailer or logistics company may all need very different forms of automation, despite using many of the same underlying technologies.
Zoho has one advantage many AI startups do not
There is another reason Zoho’s approach is worth watching.
The company already owns a large portfolio of enterprise applications covering CRM, finance, HR, customer service, collaboration, analytics and other business functions.
That gives its AI systems something particularly valuable: context.
Zoho argues that its shared data model, broad application portfolio and internally managed technology stack allow Zia to work across different parts of a business rather than remaining isolated inside one application.
For an AI agent, context is crucial.
A customer-service agent becomes much more useful if it can understand the customer’s previous interactions, order information and service history.
A sales agent becomes more valuable if it can connect CRM information with emails, meetings and other business data.
The real competition in enterprise AI may therefore not be about which company has the most impressive chatbot.
It may be about which platform has enough access to business context to allow its agents to take meaningful action.
But autonomous AI creates a new management problem
Giving an AI agent the ability to act introduces questions that did not exist when AI merely generated text.
What information can it access?
Which applications can it control?
How much authority should it have?
What happens when it makes the wrong decision?
And when should a human be required to intervene?
Zoho’s own Agent Studio reflects this reality by allowing businesses to define tools, authenticated connections, instructions and guardrails around agents.
As agentic AI spreads, these controls could become as important as the AI models themselves.
Companies may eventually manage digital workers in much the same way they manage employee permissions today, deciding which systems each agent can access and which actions it is authorized to perform.
That creates an entirely new layer of enterprise governance.
A different AI conversation at FDC Summit
Zoho’s presence at FDC Summit 2026 therefore opens a different discussion from the cybersecurity-heavy stories surrounding many other participants.
The question is not simply how companies protect AI.
It is what happens when companies begin allowing AI to operate their businesses.
Sales agents that qualify prospects, customer-service agents that resolve requests and HR systems that interact conversationally with employees suggest that the next phase of enterprise AI may be much less visible than the chatbot boom that introduced generative AI to millions of users.
AI could gradually disappear into the workflow itself.
For organizations exploring digital transformation, that may ultimately matter more than having another AI assistant on the screen.
Because the real test of enterprise AI is no longer whether it can produce a good answer.
It is whether companies are ready to trust it with the work.
