Oil Climbs Toward $90 as Fading US-Iran Peace Hopes and Hormuz Tanker Disruptions Revive Geopolitical Risk Premium

Crude oil prices advanced during Asian trading on Monday, driven by dimming expectations for a diplomatic breakthrough in US-Iran peace negotiations alongside a visible slowdown in tanker traffic navigating the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The twin developments have reintroduced a sizable geopolitical risk premium into energy markets.

International benchmark Brent crude climbed by up to 1% to touch $89.40 per barrel, before stabilizing around $89.20 per barrel (up 72 cents) as of 02:29 GMT. Meanwhile, US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures gained 44 cents to trade at $82.83 per barrel.

Market Dynamics and Analyst Perspectives

The renewed price momentum effectively recovers ground lost during early August, as market participants recalibrate supply security risks across key Middle Eastern maritime chokepoints.

"Oil prices have now nearly returned to prior baseline levels following the dip in early August, as hopes for a durable US-Iran resolution fade and the geopolitical risk premium returns to the market," noted Priyanka Sachdeva, Market Insights Lead at Phillip Nova in Singapore.

"However, upside potential from current levels appears bounded unless tangible evidence of renewed escalation emerges in the Strait of Hormuz—specifically direct, significant physical damage to tanker fleets or vital oil infrastructure," Sachdeva added.
