MCIT Partners with PDPC, GIZ on Data Protection Training for NGOs
The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), in collaboration with the Personal Data Protection Center (PDPC) and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), has organized a training program on Egypt's Personal Data Protection Law for non-governmental organizations. The training took place at Creativa Innovation Hub in Giza, within the framework of the Digital Citizenship and Online Safety Initiative.
The program has been designed to help NGOs understand the requirements of the Data Protection Law and translate them into practical institutional policies. It covers the legal and regulatory dimensions of data protection, with the aim of strengthening the protection of beneficiaries' data, raising awareness of legal and regulatory responsibilities, and promoting safe data handling.
The first session focused on digital privacy, from awareness to everyday practice. It explored core data protection concepts, including the distinction between privacy, information security, and cybersecurity, alongside the full data lifecycle: from collection and use to storage, sharing, archiving, and secure deletion.
The session also had a hands-on component, with interactive exercises and case studies that had participants examine everyday practices that could compromise beneficiaries' privacy. Discussion also turned to the concept of privacy by design, building in privacy protections from the earliest stages of a project. Emerging challenges were also addressed, such as metadata, AI tools, deepfake technology, and the need to handle these carefully and avoid entering personal or beneficiary data into them unsafely.
The Digital Citizenship and Online Safety Initiative is a community-focused program run by MCIT to promote the safe and responsible use of technology, and raise awareness of digital safety. It aims to build the public's ability to navigate online risks and understand the protection, support, and reporting mechanisms available to them.
