Egypt’s LNG Imports Hit Record High in July Amid Surging Domestic Demand and Regional Tensions
An Egyptian government official stated that Egypt's imports of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) surged to a record high this past July, driven by the escalating needs of the domestic natural gas market.
Speaking to CNN Business Arabic on the condition of anonymity, the official revealed that Egypt received 21 LNG shipments throughout July. This volume is expected to climb even higher during the current month, as domestic demand for natural gas continues to intensify amid soaring summer temperatures.
According to data from S&P Global Energy CERA, Egypt topped the list of destinations for U.S. LNG shipments in July. This surge occurs against a backdrop of ongoing supply disruptions stemming from the U.S.-Iran war, which has consequently heightened competition between Asian and European markets for available gas volumes.
In a related move to bolster domestic capacity, the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources had previously reached an agreement with the German government to charter the regasification unit "ENERGOS FORCE" for a two-month period, concluding at the beginning of October.
Egypt initially resumed LNG imports in April 2024 to meet the growing natural gas demands of the electricity sector and to curb power outages experienced in earlier months. However, by early 2025, the Ministry significantly expanded its LNG import operations, successfully securing contracts to charter four floating regasification units to ensure energy security.
