Egypt Activates Health Emergency Plan Following 5.5-Magnitude Earthquake in Cairo; No Casualties Reported

The Egyptian government has announced the activation of a nationwide health emergency plan following an earthquake that struck several areas of the country, including the capital, Cairo. Official reports indicate that there have been no casualties or material damage thus far.

In an official statement, the Ministry of Health and Population announced directives to "activate the health emergency plan immediately after citizens felt the tremor that occurred at dawn on Monday, August 3, 2026."

Round-the-Clock Health Monitoring

Minister of Health Khaled Abdel Ghaffar directed the convening of the central crisis and emergency operations room at the ministry's headquarters in the New Administrative Capital. The central room has been linked with emergency operation centers across all governorate health directorates to ensure real-time, round-the-clock monitoring of the situation.

The Minister emphasized the necessity of "raising the state of maximum readiness across emergency and critical care departments in all hospitals nationwide." He also stressed the full preparedness of the Egyptian Ambulance Authority, its fleet, and rapid deployment teams, while mandating the availability of sufficient strategic stocks of medicines, medical supplies, blood bags, and oxygen.

Furthermore, the ministry's statement confirmed that "the health situation remains entirely stable, with no reports of earthquake-related injuries received up to this moment."

In a parallel move, the Egyptian Red Crescent issued a statement confirming the "activation of the emergency plan in cities that felt the tremor," adding that "no reports of human casualties or property damage have been received to date."

Earlier on Monday, the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) announced that a 5.5-magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale was recorded east of Cairo at 3:00 AM local time. The institute's statement corroborated that the seismic event resulted in no loss of life or damage to property.
