Huawei FreeClip 2 Targets Open-Ear Audio Market With AI-Powered Sound and 38-Hour Battery Life
Huawei is expanding its open-ear audio portfolio with the HUAWEI FreeClip 2, a new generation of clip-style wireless earbuds designed to address the compromises traditionally associated with open-ear listening, particularly sound depth, call clarity and long-term comfort.
The new model arrives two years after the launch of the original FreeClip and retains the distinctive C-Bridge design that allows the earbuds to sit around the ear without blocking the ear canal. Huawei is positioning the device as an option for users who want to remain aware of their surroundings while listening to music, taking calls or commuting.
Each earbud weighs 5.1 grams, around 9% less than the previous generation, while the section resting against the ear has been reduced in size by 11%. Huawei has also redesigned the C-Bridge using skin-friendly liquid silicone and a shape-memory alloy, making it 25% softer and more flexible, according to the company.
The most significant upgrade, however, comes in the acoustic system. The FreeClip 2 uses a dual-diaphragm driver intended to increase volume and bass output within the limited space available in an open-ear design.
Huawei has paired the hardware with computational audio and an AI-focused processor, saying the new earbuds deliver ten times the processing power of their predecessor. The FreeClip 2 is also the company’s first pair of earbuds to feature a dedicated neural processing unit.
That additional processing power is used to analyse surrounding noise and automatically adjust playback levels. In louder environments, the earbuds can strengthen voice frequencies to make podcasts, audiobooks and spoken content easier to hear, before returning to a lower volume when the user moves into a quieter setting.
Call performance has also been upgraded through a three-microphone system and deep neural network noise-reduction algorithms. Huawei says the system can distinguish the speaker’s voice from background noise and improve clarity during calls in busy streets, offices and other crowded environments.
Battery life reaches up to nine hours from the earbuds alone and 38 hours when used with the charging case. A 10-minute charge can provide up to three hours of playback, while wireless charging is supported, including compatibility with selected smartwatch chargers.
The earbuds carry an IP57 rating for resistance to water and sweat, making them suitable for workouts and outdoor use.
Huawei has also focused on cross-platform connectivity. The FreeClip 2 can maintain connections with two devices and automatically switch between products running iOS, Android and Windows. Additional switching options are available when paired with devices using Huawei’s EMUI software.
The company is targeting users seeking a single pair of earbuds for work, exercise and daily travel, with the combination of an open fit, adaptive audio and extended battery life forming the core of the FreeClip 2’s appeal.
