Elon Musk’s X Accuses Australia of Undermining US Law with Teen Social Media Ban Enforcement
Elon Musk’s social media platform X has accused the Australian government of seeking unfair information-gathering powers for its eSafety Commissioner and undermining US law through plans to tighten enforcement of its teenage social media ban.
Australia’s world-first legislation, which prohibits individuals under 16 years of age from opening social media accounts, officially took effect last December. The ban has drawn widespread criticism from major social media companies, the majority of which are headquartered in the United States.
The claims made by X—which operates under the newly listed SpaceX—introduce a geopolitical dimension to the ongoing debate involving one of the world's most influential business figures.
In a formal submission to an Australian Senate committee, X stated that the proposed enforcement plans fail to give:
"Sufficient consideration to procedural fairness, privacy, and the broader impacts on online services and Australia's digital economy."
