EU Ambassadors Approve 21st Sanctions Package Against Russia, Targeting Banking Sector and Moscow Exchange
European Union ambassadors approved on Thursday the 21st package of sanctions against Russia over the ongoing war in Ukraine. Marking the bloc's largest round of sanctions in four years, the new measures heavily target the Russian banking sector, while simultaneously reaching a compromise with Greece to ease certain restrictions related to Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG).
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stated that the new package encompasses 218 entities and individuals. Notably, this includes 94 Russian financial institutions and the Moscow Exchange.
This latest escalation brings the total number of sanctioned Russian banks to over 100, accounting for more than half of all Russian financial institutions connected to the international financial system.
