?Why Is OpenAI Selling a $70 ChatGPT Basetball?
SAN FRANCISCO — OpenAI has expanded the ChatGPT brand beyond software with an unusual new product: a full-size basketball carrying the chatbot’s name and selling for $70 through the company’s official merchandise store.
The ball is part of OpenAI’s «Pause. Play. Prompt.» campaign, which links physical activity with creative thinking. The company describes the product as a reminder that ideas do not emerge only while people are sitting in front of screens.
According to the official listing, the ChatGPT Basketball is a standard size-seven ball measuring 29.5 inches and made entirely from rubber. The initial stock has already sold out, although OpenAI has not said whether more units will be released.
The product is being sold through Supply Co., OpenAI’s recently expanded merchandise operation. The store offers branded clothing, hats, socks, bottles, bags and other objects connected to ChatGPT, Codex and the company’s research identity.
OpenAI says Supply Co. began as a small merchandise programme for employees before growing into a wider collection of collaborations, experiments and physical expressions of the company’s culture.
That explanation provides the clearest answer to why an artificial intelligence company is selling sporting equipment. The basketball is primarily a branding product rather than a new technology business or an indication that OpenAI plans to enter the sports-goods market.
It also reflects a broader effort by major technology companies to turn digital services into consumer brands with recognisable identities beyond their apps and websites.
For OpenAI, products such as clothing, accessories and the basketball can help make ChatGPT feel less like an abstract software tool and more like a familiar cultural brand. Limited availability may also create demand among employees, developers, technology enthusiasts and collectors.
The campaign’s underlying message is that creativity can benefit from stepping away from a computer. In its product description, OpenAI suggests that useful ideas can emerge during breaks and physical activities, including moments between basketball plays.
There is no indication in the official announcement that the ball contains sensors, artificial intelligence features or any connection to the ChatGPT service itself. It is a conventional rubber basketball distinguished by its branding and association with the promotional campaign.
The $70 price places it above many ordinary recreational basketballs, indicating that OpenAI is positioning it partly as a limited-edition design object or collectible rather than competing solely on sporting performance.
Supply Co. says some products may be offered in limited quantities to give more customers an opportunity to purchase them. It also does not accept returns or exchanges for non-defective products because of restricted availability.
The basketball therefore represents less of a strategic business shift than an exercise in brand building: using an unexpected physical product to promote ChatGPT, attract attention and reinforce OpenAI’s message that creativity extends beyond the screen.
