Apple’s Next iPad Mini Could Arrive by October With OLED Display and Major Design Upgrades
Apple is reportedly preparing to launch a new generation of the iPad mini by October 2026, with the compact tablet expected to receive an OLED screen, a faster processor and its most substantial hardware redesign in years.
Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman reported that Apple plans to introduce the device by October, according to MacRumors. Apple has not announced the product or confirmed its release schedule.
The most significant expected change is the transition from an LCD panel to OLED technology, following Apple’s adoption of OLED displays in the iPad Pro range in 2024.
OLED screens control each pixel individually, allowing the display to produce deeper blacks, stronger contrast and richer colours than conventional LCD panels. Reports have suggested that the screen could also grow slightly from the current 8.3 inches, although the final dimensions remain uncertain.
The new iPad mini is also expected to use either Apple’s A19 Pro processor or a newer A20-series chip, replacing the A17 Pro found in the current model. The upgrade would deliver stronger graphics, artificial intelligence and general computing performance.
Apple’s existing iPad mini combines the A17 Pro with a six-core CPU, five-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine. It also supports Apple Intelligence and Apple Pencil Pro.
A third major change could involve a redesigned speaker system that generates sound through vibrations in the device’s enclosure rather than relying entirely on conventional speaker openings.
Removing or reducing external speaker grilles could help Apple create a more tightly sealed chassis and improve resistance to water and dust. Current iPad mini models carry no official water-resistance rating.
The fourth expected upgrade is therefore a more water-resistant body, potentially making the tablet more practical in kitchens, hospitals, workshops and other environments where its small size is already an advantage.
The reported changes suggest Apple is positioning the iPad mini as more than a smaller version of its mainstream tablet. The device has developed a following among travellers, pilots, healthcare workers, students and professionals who prefer portability over a larger display.
However, the addition of an OLED panel could lead to a higher starting price. The current iPad mini starts at $499 in the United States, while previous reports have suggested that Apple could raise the price of the next model by as much as $100.
Samsung Display has reportedly begun mass production of OLED panels intended for the upcoming tablet, supporting expectations that commercial production is already moving forward ahead of a possible autumn launch.
The current iPad mini was introduced in October 2024, meaning a launch by October 2026 would give the product a roughly two-year upgrade cycle.
Key details remain unresolved, including whether the OLED screen will retain a 60Hz refresh rate or adopt Apple’s smoother 120Hz ProMotion technology.
Apple is also yet to confirm the processor, pricing, water-resistance certification or whether the device will be unveiled at a dedicated event or through an online announcement.
