‏Egypt Participates in ATU 7th Plenipotentiary Conference

Egypt, represented by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), is participating in the 7th Ordinary Session of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) Conference of Plenipotentiaries (CPL-26), running July 23–24 in Abuja, Nigeria.

Held every four years, the Plenipotentiary Conference is the Union's highest decision-making body. It reviews amendments to its founding constitution and convention along with related legal and policy documents, evaluates the General Secretariat's work and budget over the past four years, and adopts the strategic plan and budget for the upcoming term (2027–2031).

This year's event will also elect members to the ATU's 28-member Administrative Council, as well as a new Secretary-General to lead the Secretariat for the next four years.

MCIT places a high priority on active engagement in ATU meetings and activities, particularly on strategic matters, given Egypt's status as a founding member of the Union since 1977 and the standing it holds within it, working alongside the Secretariat and fellow member states to help shape unified African positions in relevant international forums.

Egypt's participation in the conference carries particular weight on several fronts. Chief among them is its bid for a seat on the Administrative Council. The country is also taking part in electing the new Secretary-General, a post contested by five countries: Tunisia, South Africa, Zambia, Cameroon, and the Republic of Congo. In addition, Egypt is looking to help shape the Union's four-year plan in line with its own national priorities.
