Uber in Advanced Talks to Acquire Delivery Hero in Major Global Food Delivery Shake-Up
Uber Technologies Inc. (UBER.N) is nearing one of the largest deals in the global food delivery sector, having entered advanced negotiations to acquire the German firm Delivery Hero (DHER.DE). If finalized, the acquisition would significantly redraw the competitive landscape for delivery and mobility services, cementing Uber’s footprint across Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Latin America.
Delivery Hero confirmed that it is in advanced talks regarding a potential takeover offer that would be presented to all shareholders, though it did not disclose the proposed financial value. Uber has declined to comment on the ongoing negotiations.
Market Reaction and Financial Valuations
Analysts estimate that any formal offer will grant the German company a valuation above its recent trading price of approximately €36 per share. Following reports of the negotiations, Delivery Hero's stock jumped 5.76% to close at €39.10, while Uber shares dipped by about 2%.
Currently, Delivery Hero's market capitalization stands at roughly €11.2 billion (approximately $12.8 billion). The company's stock has surged by nearly 62% since the beginning of the year, reflecting strong investor anticipation of a finalized deal and an improved corporate valuation.
Earlier in May, Uber submitted an initial preliminary offer of €38 per share, which was ultimately rejected by investors who felt it undervalued the company, leading to continued negotiations. During that same month, Uber strategically increased its stake in Delivery Hero from 25% to approximately 37% by purchasing shares from Aspex Management—a move widely viewed as a precursor to a full takeover attempt.
Strategic Expansion and Industry Consolidation
A successful acquisition would grant Uber Eats massive geographical expansion. However, the deal is expected to face rigorous antitrust scrutiny from regulators due to the significant overlap of both companies' operations in multiple markets.
This potential acquisition aligns with a rising wave of mergers and acquisitions within the food delivery sector, as companies strive to improve profit margins in the face of slowing growth, fierce competition, and climbing operational costs.
Uber’s Broader Diversification Strategy
The move is part of Uber's aggressive strategy to diversify its revenue streams beyond traditional ride-hailing. The company has been steadily expanding into grocery delivery, local commerce, and travel services, recently entering the hotel booking space.
Earlier this year, Uber Eats launched operations in seven new European markets—including Austria, Denmark, and Norway—with projections to add nearly $1 billion to its total gross bookings over the next three years.
Should the Delivery Hero deal go through, it will mark one of the most prominent M&A transactions in the digital services sector in recent years, reinforcing Uber's dominance in local commerce and global delivery platforms.
