SoftBank’s Masayoshi Son Dismisses Space Data Centers, Doubles Down on Earth-Based AI Infrastructure

SoftBank Group Founder and CEO Masayoshi Son has firmly dismissed the commercial viability of building data centers in space, asserting that the global Artificial Intelligence (AI) race will be won through massive, rapid infrastructure development on Earth, rather than through complex and costly orbital projects.

Speaking at a recent shareholders' meeting, Son addressed the growing theoretical appeal of space-based data centers, which promise alternative energy sources and potentially lower certain operating costs. However, he quickly debunked the concept's practical feasibility for the near future.

The Logic Against Orbital Computing:

Cost Structure Reality: Son clarified that electricity is no longer the primary cost driver for modern data centers. The overwhelming majority of capital expenditure is heavily concentrated in advanced microchips, computing equipment, and high-tech infrastructure.

Logistical Nightmares: Relocating data centers to space would trigger astronomical costs associated with rocket launches, orbital maintenance, and operations.

Latency and Connectivity: The immense challenges related to data transmission and communication latency make space investments highly inefficient compared to the rapid scalability of ground-based facilities.

"The next few years are absolutely critical in the global AI race," Son emphasized. "The companies that succeed in building colossal computational capacities at the fastest possible rate will be the ones leading the industry."

Consequently, SoftBank Group will maintain its aggressive focus on constructing giant, earth-bound data centers equipped to support the most advanced AI applications, leaving orbital ambitions to traditional aerospace entities.
