Egypt Participates in Regional Conference on Data Protection, AI Governance in Southern Mediterranean

Egypt is participating in the Regional Conference of Data Protection Authorities and National Authorities Responsible for AI Governance in the Southern Mediterranean, held on June 23–24 in Nicosia, Cyprus.

The event is organized by the Council of Europe (CoE) in collaboration with the ICT Academy of the Office of the Commissioner of Communications, Cyprus, and with the support of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), under the joint EU–CoE South Programme VI.

The Egyptian delegation includes officials from the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), the Ministry of Justice, the Egyptian Center for Responsible AI (ECRAI) of MCIT, and the Personal Data Protection Center (PDPC).

The conference brings together senior representatives and technical experts from Southern Mediterranean and European countries to discuss national developments in data protection and AI, explore challenges around transparency, accountability, and risk management in AI systems, and share best practices. Sessions also address the risk and impact assessment of AI systems from the point of view of human rights, democracy, and the rule of law (HUDERIA) methodology, developed by CoE.

On the sidelines of the conference, CoE is officially launching the Arabic version of its Human Rights Education for Legal Professionals (HELP) training on AI and human rights. The launch marks an important milestone for the Southern Mediterranean region, making this professional training resource accessible to a wider Arabic-speaking audience for the first time.

Egypt's participation reflects its growing commitment to aligning its legal and institutional frameworks for personal data protection and AI governance with international standards. The country’s participation also comes in the context of broader institutional cooperation with CoE.
